1st Beach (Eastons Beach) surf guide

1st Beach, also known as Eastons Beach, is located in Newport, Rhode Island. It's the closest surf spot to the city and offers a long, gently-sloping sandy bay. This beach does attract a variety of beachgoers, but it tends to have fewer surfers compared to other spots along the coast. The area is family-friendly and has plenty of facilities, making it a convenient choice for a beach day.

The surf at 1st Beach can be a bit hit or miss. It generally works best with a southeast swell (around 0.6 to 1.5 meters) and can handle conditions from 2ft to 5ft (.6 to 1.5 meters). The beach is known for its soft beachbreak, which can produce mellow waves that are ideal for beginners. The waves typically break over a sandy bottom and can come in from the left or right. Depending on the swell, the beach can close out, especially when the waves get bigger. Winds from the north are preferable, and you can catch a ride at any tide, though it tends to work best during low, mid, or high tides.

Access to the beach is easy, but do note that parking fees apply in the summer. The spot can get crowded during the summer and fall, so if you prefer a quieter experience, you might want to visit in the winter. If youโ€™re into longboarding, this beach is definitely worth checking out for its fun and consistent rollers, especially during the fall and winter months.
