More about 91st St Pier surfspot

General: The pier at 91st street stretches over 1,000 feet into the gulf and provides some of the best sandbars on the island. Unfortunately it provides less protection from the consistent onshore winds and longshore currents making most sessions a constant battle to stay in position at the fun pier bowls. Tides: Medium to high Size: Waist high to a few feet overhead Wind: N, NW, WNW with swell Swell: S, SE Bottom: Sand. Paddling: The rip by the pier makes it easy to get out, but expect to paddle against the current to stay in position. Spot Rating: Best shortboard wave in Galveston on most days with swell.

Intermediate to advanced

Easy, paid parking on the seawall.

Late summer/fall; late winter to mid-spring

Crowd Factor: Dense lineup at the best peaks, spread out the farther from the pier you get. Local Vibe: Can be competitive on the good days at the best peaks.

Proximity to Houston shipping channel and runoff from Galveston equals often not the best water quality.

Angry fishermen.
