Fast, hollow waves breaking on sandbars held in place by groynes on this 1.5mile stretch of beach. Hollow peaks at low to mid tide and good rights into the River Don.

General: A 3 mile long stretch of sand that runs north from the mouth of the River Dee with a number of banks that work through the tides, sculpted in part by the obvious impediment of groynes built to lessen beach erosion. Sandbars also form around the mouth of the River Don at the northern end of the Esplanade. Obviously beware of rips. Tides: All tides but best at low. Size: Thigh to head high. Wind: W Swell: SE, E, NE Bottom: Sand with groynes. Paddling: Hard work in anything but small waves. Spot Rating: Beachbreak that can be excellent but depends on the banks which shift and form around groynes and rivermouth.

Fun spot for all, beginners watch out for rips in anything but tiny waves.

Plenty of Beachfront parking.

December - February.

Crowd Factor: Can get busy, but generally mellow. Local Vibe: Chilled.

Watch out for groynes and backwash off the seawall at high tide. Strong cross-shore currents, shipwrecks and tank barrier blocks tank traps?? to avoid. Park on the esplanade.

Can be polluted after rains.

Long shore drift and strong rips a problem, plus many groynes.
