Aitape surf guide

Aitape is Saudaun’s largest settlement, home to about 25,000 people and a significant Catholic mission station. This spot features a solid left break off the point that protects the town's harbor. The wave runs for about 75 meters (225 feet) and works best during medium to low tides. The crowd is generally light, mostly featuring a few local surfers and one Aussie who seems to enjoy the place.

When it comes to surfing, Aitape has a few key points to keep in mind. The optimal swell direction is from the north, although it can also handle waves coming from the northwest and northeast. The spot can work with swell sizes starting from around 2 feet (0.6 meters), which can make for some fun sessions. The wave breaks over dead coral, offering a reef setup for surfers who prefer those types of waves. Most of the time, it's a left-hand wave, and it’s best surfed when the wind is coming from the west. This spot is more suited for intermediate surfers, so it’s a good idea to be comfortable on your board before heading out.

Aitape is also interesting because it's connected by a rough coastal road to East Sepik Province, adding a bit of adventure to your trip. The local culture is rich, with sacred masks, carvings, and pottery that can be found in museums around the world. Plus, the area is known for robust coffee and cocoa, providing local economic support.
