Aitape is Saudaun’s largest settlement with 25,000 people and a major catholic mission station. Off the point protecting the town's harbour, a superb left spins for 75m (225ft) over a reef, working better on a medium to low tide and so far, the only crowd to deal with is one Aussie local.
Aitape is connected by a rough coastal road to the large East Sepik Province. Sacred masks, carvings and pottery from East Sepik are in museums around the world, while Robusta coffee and cocoa are other cash earners. The Sepik River is the heart of province, but regular flooding limits the use of nearby flat land.
