Ala Moana Bowls is a well-known surf spot located near Ala Wai Harbor in Honolulu, Oahu. This break is famous for its long, shacking lefts that peel down a shallow reef. It was formed due to the dredging of a deepwater channel, which allows S swell to refract out and create waves along the reef. The area can get quite crowded with local surfers, and it tends to appeal to those who are confident and patient.
This spot works best with an optimal swell direction from the South, but it can also handle swells coming from the Southeast and Southwest. Surfable swells can range from about 3 ft (around 1 meter) and up. The waves break over live coral and can produce both lefts and rights. The best conditions come with a NorthEast wind, and it can handle various tide heights, including low, mid, and high tides. Generally, this spot is best suited for expert surfers due to its challenging environment.
When paddling out, it's common to head from Magic Island, especially during bigger swells. On smaller days, you can paddle directly into the channel. Be mindful that the area has a lot going on, including currents, reef hazards, and potential shark sightings. While the surf can be consistently good during summer, winter conditions can be pretty hit or miss, so plan accordingly!
