Anse de Pen-hat surf guide

Anse de Pen-hat, also known as Penhat or Pen Had, is a surf spot located just off the beaten path, not far from Pointe du Toulinguet. This beach features a stunning backdrop with castle ruins, making it a picturesque place to catch some waves. It's worth noting that while the spot can get crowded, it still offers some decent options for surfers looking to enjoy the ocean. Keep in mind that Anse de Pen-hat receives less swell than its neighbor La Palue, which could be a consideration depending on what you’re after.

The surf here is mainly a hollow beachbreak that can handle swell sizes starting at 1 foot (about 0.3 meters) and can get a bit punchy at times. The optimal swell direction is from the west, but the spot can work well with swells coming from the southwest and northwest too. You can expect waves breaking over sand, with both left and right waves available. It’s best surfed at low, mid, or high tide, but if you're looking for the most favorable conditions, aim for the mid incoming tide. Intermediate surfers will feel comfortable here, but always be mindful of the strong rips that can shape the peaks at both ends of the beach.

As the popularity of Anse de Pen-hat grows, there are also other wave options nearby that can provide shelter from strong swells and winds. If you're planning a surf session, it’s a good idea to explore these alternatives for a more enjoyable experience. Just follow the signs to Pointe du Toulinguet and you’ll be on your way to a day of surfing.
