Arenillas Negras is a wider exposed beachbreak that offers a mix of fun for surfers of varying skill levels. The beach is scattered with rocks, and conditions can change, so it's essential to keep an eye on the surf. The spot generally provides some mellow rides, especially suited for beginners, but it's not the most consistent location. Nearby is a bodyboarding hotspot called El Rancio known for its intense righthand slabs when the swell hits just right.
The optimal swell direction for Arenillas Negras is from the SouthWest, but itβs also able to handle swells coming from the South and NorthWest. The beach tends to break over sand, which makes it a bit kinder to those just starting out. When conditions are on, you can catch waves ranging from 3 feet (about 0.9 meters) to bigger sizes, although most rides tend to be short mid-tide slides. The wave direction varies, so you can find both lefts and rights. For the best experience, stick to a mid-tide with NorthEast winds.
Even though it's a beginner-friendly location, it's a good idea to be mindful of the waves and the configurations, particularly when you venture close to those rockier sections. Always be prepared for changing conditions and know your limits out there. If you find the main break a bit crowded or not to your taste, check out El Rancio for a different experience, especially if you're into bodyboarding.
