Atalaia surf guide

Atalaia is a well-known surf spot located in Salinas. It's a popular choice among local surfers, thanks to its long stretches of sandy beachbreak. The waves here tend to be mushy and are best during N/NE swells that roll in with a rising tide. The vibe can get pretty crowded, especially during holidays, reflecting its reputation as a central hub for surfing in this area. While the conditions are often decent, don’t expect top-tier waves all the time.

The surf at Atalaia is generally good for beginners, as the waves can be caught at sizes starting around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters). The sandbars here break the waves both to the left and the right, giving surfers a bit of a choice. When the swell comes from the north, it tends to work best, but you can also find decent swells from the east. It’s important to note that the waves hold up well at low, mid, and high tides, making it a versatile spot for a variety of tide conditions. Ideally, the wind should be coming from the south for the best experience.

If you're looking for a bit of adventure, just around the headland, Praia do Farol Velho offers some smaller right-hand waves that can be fun to explore when Atalaia is crowded. It's a good idea to check both spots and see what works best for the day and your skill level.
