Overview
Atlantic Terrace is a south-facing Montauk beach break over mostly sand, with boulders and a sand-covered reef in the mix. It has a bit more push than nearby spots and can produce credible tubes when the swell is on.
The wave breaks closer to shore on smaller days, with occasional good shape before high tide shuts it down.
When It Works
Atlantic Terrace is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and can get good on medium-size swells. It is moderately consistent, with autumn and winter the main seasons, and September through March worth watching.
Swell can come from east through south to southwest, with southeast as the optimal swell direction. On east swells it is mostly lefts, while south swells tend to make it mostly rights.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is northwest, with northwest to north-northwest the workable wind window.
It favors low tide to mid tide, and a rising tide is better. High tide kills it completely.
Local Tips
This is best suited to intermediate surfers on a shortboard or fish. The lineup is busy and somewhat reserved, with locals and vacationers from the beachfront hotels often in the mix.
There are a few different peak options, which can help spread people out. On bigger swells it can break farther out, and the paddle can be tough. Watch for the occasional rock.
Access
Access is easy, but parking near the beach is restricted without a town permit, which costs $150 a year. Paid parking is also part of the setup. There is a surf shop nearby, and the area is pretty clean overall.
