More about Aviones surfspot

General: Many folks consider this the most consistent surf spot on the island. Somehow, a lucky confluence of bathymetry and direction allows Aviones to be punchy and shoulder-high when there's no surf anywhere else. It's a fairly radical reefbreak, with one entry and exit -- miss either, and you'll be picking sea urchins out of your toes for months to come. The wave itself is a serious, fairly shallow, A-frame bowl with a super-steep takeoff into a scallop-shaped right and left wall. Five-second tubes are not uncommon on standout days -- especially considering the talent level out at this break. Combine the consistency, quality, and proximity to San Juan, and it can get crowded. One downer is the fact that it blows out pretty much every day by noon. Get it early. Tides: Any Size: Chest high-overhead+ Wind: South Swell: NW, N, NE Bottom: Reef Paddling: Depends on the size of the surf. Spot Rating: Very consistent and can get good when there is a disruption of the normal trade winds.

Intermediate to advanced

Park right there and give the locals a couple bucks, you're parking in their front yard, dude.

Late summer and fall for tropical cyclone swells but late fall through early spring for consistency.

Crowd Factor: Definitely can be crowded on good days. Local Vibe: Can be pretty intense.

Not bad.

Crowds.
