Back Beach (Taranaki) surf guide

Surf: The consistent, quality waves of Back Beach are where New Plymouth surfers head to get the most out of the swell and the north end banks are a regular contest site. Powerful and peaky waves in any W swell and any E wind, there can be long tapered walls on the push. Directions: From New Plymouth city centre head south west on Devon Street West, The surf Highway, State Highway 45, then turn right onto Lawry Street and left onto Breakwater Road. Near the port turn left onto Ngamotu Road then the first right onto Centennial Drive. Head down Centennial Drive and just past Rangitake Drive turn right into the Back Beach car park. Environment: This could be one of the most consistent beachbreaks in NZ despite being shredded by the SW winds. If it's flat here it's game over. Watch out for the scattered rocks.
