Overview
Bahoruco is a cobblestone point on the far southwest coast of the Dominican Republic, and one of the best little setups around. It's a left that breaks over rock with a reef-point character, and the water is clean. Sitting well away from any major population centre, in a region that's only recently seeing an influx of tourism, it's the most likely place you'll surf alone in the country. The paddle out is pretty easy.
When It Works
Swell comes in from east-northeast to east, and the point is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Spring, autumn and winter are the seasons worth watching, and when it lines up it's a good wave.
Wind and Tide
Look for east-southeast offshore wind, though the workable wind window is wide, running north through south to west-southwest. The point can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate and expert surfers on a shortboard. Expect a quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved, and keep an eye out for some rocks.
