Bajos Del Polonio is a surf spot located about 230km (143mi) from Montevideo. It's known for its beaches that feature a mix of waves and the second largest colony of seals in the country, adding some unique wildlife to the area. This spot offers surfers a decent chance to catch some waves, though it can be hit or miss depending on the conditions.
The surf here mostly comes in the form of beachbreaks that break over sand, with waves that can generally handle sizes starting from around 2ft (0.6m) and up. The optimal swell direction is from the East, but it can pick up swells from the Northeast and Southwest as well. You can find both left and right waves, which makes it a decent spot for surfers with intermediate skills. The best times to surf are during low, mid, or high tide, and winds from the west tend to work in your favor. However, be aware that when it gets overhead, rips can become an issue, so keep an eye on the conditions.
If you're looking to explore further, there are nearby beaches to check out on the north side like Calavera, Valizas, and Aquas Dulces. Each of these adds a little variety to your surf trip, providing more options on good days or when Bajos Del Polonio is not delivering.
