Bakio surf guide

Playa de Bakio is a well-known surf spot in the Basque Country that's often overlooked for more famous breaks like Mundaka. It's a beachbreak that offers a mix of solid waves and a decent atmosphere, making it a popular choice for both locals and visitors. The beach features a small stream that splits the sand, with the western side providing a more open beach and scattered peaks, while the eastern side has rocky outcrops that help create better banks when the conditions align. It attracts a good number of surfers, especially when the swell is on the smaller side.

The surf at Bakio can be quite enjoyable, especially for intermediate surfers. It typically handles swell sizes from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) to 8 feet (2.4 meters). The optimal swell direction comes from the Northwest, with good waves breaking over sand. Surfers can expect a mix of left and right waves, and while you can catch waves at all tides, low to mid tide tends to be the best. Wind from the South is preferred for cleaner conditions. Overall, while it may not always produce world-class waves, on the right day, you can find some solid barrels, especially from the rocky end when the swell is good.

The local crew here is pretty tight-knit, so it's good to come with a relaxed attitude. While there is a degree of localism, most locals are tolerant as long as you show respect. The spot can get crowded, especially during summer months when it transforms into a beach resort, so be prepared for larger numbers in the water. If you have a shortboard, funboard, longboard, or even a fish, you'll find something to ride here in autumn, which is the best season to catch the waves.
