Balmedie to Newburgh is a remote stretch of beach that offers a mix of often overlooked beach breaks. It's not as popular as some other spots, but it can pick up the same swell as Aberdeen, giving surfers a chance to catch some decent waves when the conditions line up. The area has a relaxed vibe, making it a nice escape from the busier surf spots.
This stretch of beach works best with a north swell, but you’ll also find it catching swells from the northeast and southeast. It can handle swell sizes starting from around 2ft (0.6m), and the waves typically break over sand. You can expect both left and right-hand waves, which is great for varying your sessions depending on your preference. For the best results, aim to surf here with the wind blowing from the west, and keep in mind that all tide heights—low, mid, and high—can work well here.
When you’re heading out to surf, keep an eye out for salmon nets and be aware of kiters in the area. Access to the beach is from Balmedie Country Park, which makes it pretty straightforward to get to. Just be prepared for a more laid-back experience compared to some other spots along the coast.
