Overview
Belleair is a sand-bottom beach spot with lefts and rights, working as a shorebreak to mid-break. It faces more north than Indian Rocks, which makes it a useful option for weak cold fronts with north wind. Overall, it is a pretty average wave, but it can still be worth a look when the setup lines up.
When It Works
The spot picks up north-northwest through north to southwest swell, with northwest noted as a useful direction. It is usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
The main seasons are autumn, winter, and spring, with hurricane season also worth watching.
Wind and Tide
Onshore wind can help generate some surf here. For cleaner conditions, northeast to east-northeast wind is noted, while east is the offshore direction. The workable wind window runs from north-northeast through east to south-southeast.
Low and mid tide can work, a rising tide is better, and mid tide is optimal.
Local Tips
Paddling is easy most days, but it can get a little more challenging on bigger windswell days. Shortboards, funboards, longboards, and skimboards all fit the spot. It suits beginners, intermediates, and experts depending on the day.
The water is usually clean outside of occasional red tide outbreaks. Keep an eye out for sharks and stingrays, and shuffle your feet when walking out to shallow sandbars.
Access
Access is very difficult because the area is mostly private residential, with mostly private parking and no real place to park. Keep driving south from Sand Key and youโll see Belleair Beach Motel.
