Bergen Aan Zee is a typical Dutch beach spot located north of the town. It's a popular destination for both locals and tourists. During the summer, the large car park tends to fill up quickly with beachgoers, which can make it feel a bit crowded at times. Despite the influx of summer tourists, surfers in the area are on the rise, looking to catch some waves.
The surf here is mainly a beach break with waves that generally lack shape and power. The optimal swell direction is from the Northwest, while it can also handle swells coming from the Southwest and North. The spot works best with swell sizes around 1 foot (0.3 meters) but can take on various sizes. You'll find both left and right breaking waves over sandy bottoms. It’s good to know that low, mid, and high tides can all work here, but the surf is often best when the winds come from the East.
Bergen Aan Zee is suited for beginners, making it a decent spot to learn and improve your skills. When looking to avoid kiters, try to catch it when the NW swells are rolling in and the winds are calm. Just keep in mind that the open beach break can sometimes be a bit featureless, so don't expect epic conditions every time.
