Big Wave Bay LT surf guide

Big Wave Bay LT is located on Lantau Island, which is a bit of a hidden gem in Hong Kong. Despite being close to the new airport, this area is mostly a country park with lots of untouched natural beauty. The rugged landscape rises steeply and is mostly quiet, making it a nice place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. However, don't expect consistent waves here, as it only really picks up when there's a good S or typhoon swell.

When it comes to surfing, Big Wave Bay LT is best with swells from the SouthWest, although it can handle swell directions from the SouthEast too. It's decent for beginners since it can work with smaller swell sizes, starting from about 1ft (0.3m). The waves break over sand, providing both left and right rides that can be enjoyable for those just starting out or looking for a casual session. The best conditions usually happen during low, mid, and high tides, with a NorthWest wind being ideal.

Getting there is pretty easy; just take a $15 taxi from the ferry pier. Once you arrive, be cautious of the rocks scattered along the beach. It's definitely a spot to check out if you're looking for something that's a bit off the beaten path!
