Black Middens surf guide

Black Middens is a surf spot located at the mouth of the Tyne River. It features a left-hand reef break that relies on significant swells to deliver a decent ride. The area is sheltered by two piers that protect shipping traffic, making it a bit unique. However, it’s not the most user-friendly spot, so be prepared for some challenges.

The optimal swell direction is from the NorthEast, with the spot also handling swells coming in from the SouthEast. It works best with swells starting from around 4ft (about 1.2 meters), breaking over boulders. The wave type is primarily a reef break, and it rolls to the left. To catch the best waves, you’ll want a NorthWest wind and aim for mid to high tide. Keep in mind that this spot is for experts only, as the ocean conditions can get rough and tricky.

Make sure to check the swell size and wind conditions before heading out, as they can greatly affect your session. Parking is available near the Admiral Collingwood monument, so you won’t have to walk too far to hit the waves. Just remember that this spot can be hit or miss, so don’t get your hopes too high every time you visit.
