Black Rock surf guide

Black Rock is a surf spot located near the Golf Course next to the airport. It's not exactly a pass, but more of a curve in the reef that makes it tricky yet interesting for surfers. The spot is known for its decent waves and specific conditions that can call for a bit more skill than usual. It's not overly crowded, so you’ll get some space to navigate the waves, but it does have its quirks that you’ll need to manage.

The waves at Black Rock mostly break to the right, but there are solid lefts that can barrel pretty well from a wedging take-off. The swell here works best when it's coming from the north, but the spot can also handle waves from the south and northeast. You’re looking at a sweet range of swell sizes, as it can handle around 4 ft (about 1.2 m) of swell. The waves break over live coral, so watch out for those. The best times to surf are during mid to high tides, and south-east winds usually make for better conditions. Keep in mind that this spot is better suited for expert surfers due to its risks, including potential closeouts and the occasional pitching lip.

One of the good things about Black Rock is its consistency, thanks to its wide swell window and constant offshores. However, short rides and the need to scramble over the reef on a dropping tide can be drawbacks. Plus, you should keep an eye out for local bodyboarders who are often hanging around. They respect the spot, and it's a good idea to do the same!
