Blacks Reef surf guide

Blacks Reef is a surf spot that's pretty well-known among locals and visitors alike. Located on the coast, it gets a good amount of swell and can be a solid choice for a session. It's not the most famous spot in the area, but it definitely has its moments. With two car parks nearby, it's easy to access after you make your way from Napier. Just be ready for some company, as this place can get crowded.

The waves here are mainly a reef break, although you’ll find sand on some parts too. The optimal swell direction is from the south, but you can also catch decent waves with swells coming from the east and southwest. It can handle swell sizes up to about 3 feet (0.9 meters) and it generally works best on mid to high tide. The rights tend to be longer and hollower, especially when the swell is good. You can catch some nice lefts, but they usually show up with more southeast to east swells. It’s a spot that’s better for intermediate surfers, so keep that in mind when you paddle out.

When it comes to wind, you’ll find the best conditions with a north wind, which helps clean up the waves. Despite the crowds, there are usually good peaks to choose from, especially during bigger swells. Just be aware of the uneven reef as you surf to stay safe and enjoy your session.
