Boca Chica surf guide

Boca Chica is located on the south side of the Brazos Santiago Pass. It’s not the most consistent spot, but it can deliver some decent waves when the conditions line up. The area features a long beach stretch, so there’s room for surfers to spread out. Keep in mind that the paddle across the pass is about 400 meters, and it’s a busy waterway used by larger boats. Also, be aware that sharks have been known to cruise in the area.

For surf conditions, Boca Chica prefers a north swell to get those lefts breaking down the beach. With a northeast swell direction, you can expect waves handling sizes as small as 1 ft (0.3 m). The spot works best on low to mid tide, but it can also be surfed on high tide. The best wind direction is from the west. While there are some quality waves that can pop up between the two jetties, most of the time, it’s suited for more experienced surfers due to its nature and conditions.

If you’re thinking about hitting Boca Chica, be prepared for some waits in between good sets. When it’s on, though, the sand bottom provides a nice ride, but expect it to get a bit crowded during peak times. Just make sure you’re good at reading the waves and navigating the lineup, as this spot can challenge even the more skilled surfers.
