Boca da Barra surf guide

Boca da Barra is a surf spot located at the mouth of the River Contas in Itacaré. It's known for its super-long right-hand waves that peel over a sandbank. When the conditions line up right, it can be a fun place to surf, especially with the south-east to south swells that roll in. It doesn't have a huge crowd, which is a plus for those looking to enjoy some waves without too much competition.

The surf here works best with an east or south swell, handling sizes around 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet). The waves generally break over sand, and you can catch some solid rides, with the longest being over 600 meters when the tide is low. The right-handers can be fast and fun, while the lefts tend to be a bit fat and slow as they head into the river. For the best experience, aim to surf during low to mid tides, and keep an eye on the wind; it’s best with a southwest breeze. Remember, this spot is really for expert surfers and strong paddlers only.

Even though there's usually space in the lineup, you should be aware that sharks can be present in the area, and it's not the best idea to surf alone, especially when you are far from the shore. Make sure you’re aware of the conditions and feel confident in your abilities before heading out at Boca da Barra.
