Cane Garden Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Cane Garden Bay is a world-class right-hand point on the west-facing side of Tortola, and it is a serious wave with no easy options. When it turns on, tubular walls peel for several hundred metres against the hill. Throaty barrels stand up at the tip of the point over shallow coral heads, race down the line into an inside bowl, then shoulder off into deep water around the corner. Everything breaks over live coral.

When It Works

The point is somewhat inconsistent and only breaks 20-30 times a year, so patience pays off. It draws swell from northwest through northeast (NW-NE), with north the optimal direction. The real trick is timing a NW-NE swell big enough to make the hairpin journey around the island into the bay; a due east swell loses its power to Anegada. Expect it to work from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast offshore wind. A northeast through east breeze keeps it clean, while a southeast wind messes it up. Tide is rarely the deciding factor here, working across low, mid, and high, though a rising tide is the better call.

Local Tips

Cane Garden Bay is an expert-only wave, and the shallow, unforgiving coral backs that up. With so few days on offer, the lineup gets busy when it works, and traveling surfers from the US East Coast and Puerto Rico often plan short hops to Tortola the moment a major swell appears.
