Cape Lookout, also known as Boy Scout Camp, is the longest cape on the West Coast of the United States, located in Oregon. It's a bit of a hike to get there, requiring a 3-mile (5 km) walk, but the scenery along the way is beautiful. The surf here can be unpredictable due to the limited swell window, so don’t expect epic sessions every time you go. The north and south sides of the cape offer different experiences, and access to the north side can be made through Cape Lookout Campground at the bottom of the cape.
When it comes to surfing, Cape Lookout can handle swells coming from the south and west. The spot can work with swell sizes starting at around 2 ft (0.6 m). The waves are mostly beach breaks and can break both left and right, making it suitable for beginners looking for some fun in the water. The best time to hit the surf is during low, mid, or high tides, preferably with an east wind to clean things up a bit.
While the surf can be hit or miss, the south side of Cape Lookout could remind some surfers of a mellow day at Palos Verdes Cove. Just be careful with your gear, as some locals may not be friendly to newcomers. It's advisable to leave your car in the lot at the top and hope for the best when you make the trek back up the steep trail after your session.
