Heading southeast down the coast from Mexico Beach, you’ll find Cape San Blas, which is known for its nice point break. This spot is at the southern tip of a sand spit, and you can catch a right point that breaks on South and West swells. It’s a bit of a hidden gem along the Emerald Coast, where the water glows in beautiful shades of green.
The surf here is pretty solid, with swell sizes ranging from 5 to 6 feet (about 1.5 to 1.8 meters). The best conditions usually come from South-Southeast, South, and South-Southwest swells. You can enjoy beach and point breaks, with waves breaking to the right and left. The wind is ideally from the North-Northeast, Northeast, East-Northeast, East, and with a light outgoing tide, it can get even better. This spot is suitable for all levels of surfers—beginners, intermediates, and experts alike. Just keep in mind that while it’s an average beach break overall, on the right day, some sandbars light up nicely.
Accessing the surf means you’ll need to park and then walk around 20 minutes to get to the spot. You probably won’t see a crowd out there, just you and maybe some bull sharks, so be vigilant. The environment is beautiful, but just remember that this area is known for having a lot of bull sharks at times, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the waters while you paddle out.
