Cappoons Bay/Bomba Shack surf guide

Cappoons Bay, also known as Bomba Shack, is a small stretch of coast that faces north, northwest, and northeast. In front of the popular Bomba Shack, there’s a well-formed reef that shapes incoming swells into clean, well-defined waves. This spot is known for having a good amount of consistency, so be ready to share the peak with fellow surfers, especially since it doesn’t take much luck to find some rideable waves here.

The spot works best with swells coming from the NNW, N, and NNE, handling sizes from about 1.2m to 2.4m (4ft to 8ft). The Bomba Shack reef does a good job of catching whatever swell is around, but it may close out once it gets over 2.4m. It favors a bit of west in the swell to get both lefts and rights working nicely. You’ll need to watch the tides; it works best at low to mid and mid to high tides, making it suitable for surfers of all skill levels, from beginners to experts. Conditions are most favorable with southeast winds, which complement the wave directions.

Access to the spot is straightforward since parking is available right there. Crowds can build up when the waves are good, so be prepared for some company in the water. The local vibe is chill, but it's always smart to be respectful out there. The environment around the bay is generally decent, and while there are a few rocks on the inside, they’re manageable with some care.
