In the middle of the bay is Castles, where it’s a case of inside zippery reforms on small days and outside meaty barrels on big days. More S in the swell is usually better and it will keep breaking through all but high tide. Outside Castles is serious in terms of power and shark threats.

The adjacent deep channel is the breeding ground for hundreds of Bronze Whalers and is easy access to the coast for the mother of all Noahs, The Great White Shark. It is outside Castles where most bites have occurred, including the attacks on a notorious but now deceased local nicknamed “Shark Bait” because he had been knocked off his board and mauled several times!
