Yet another perfectly constructed Peruvian pointbreak nestled nicely between a tall headland and a long fishing pier, allowing a triangular bar to build up and sculpt a performance ride for a good 2-300m. Starts off steep especially if it is big enough to break in front of "Eagle Rock" then the convex refraction plays its part and the wave begins to slope into the shoulder and cruise through the sections towards the pier. S-SW swells have to bend a lot so it is always smaller here, but on the plus side S wind is dead offshore. Loved by longboards and learners who can walk out on the shallow sands and jump into corners further down the line. Is rideable from waisthigh to overhead but it won't handle the real big stuff. As a bonus, there is a proper sucky, tubular right that forms up on the north side of the pier, usually late summer and will work great in both NW and big S swells.

General: A neat, little lefthand sand point, this well-known wave breaks off of the headland and peels into the bay; on bigger days you can surf all the way over to the pier. An easy wave with a bit of punch (even some tube sections), Cerro Azul is a great alternative to the bustle within Punta Hermosa, and is also a favored getaway for surfers seeking a refined lefthander over Punta Hermosa's chunky rights. Picks up plenty of swell and has reliable good shape and length. Tides: Low. Size: Head high to double overhead Wind: Glassy or E, NE Swell: SW Bottom: Sand. Paddling: Medium Spot Rating: Fun.

Crowd Factor: Gets crowded. Local Vibe: Pretty mellow.

Most walk back round to the point after a wave as there can be a bit of current. Hazards include stingrays or "pastelillos" that will inject a venomous barb when trodden on so try to shuffle your feet when walking out. High consistency (8/10) and often crowded (7/10) especially when the town fills up in the summer months. Noted for its good seafood. There are more waves worth checking out further north at Puerto Fiel.
