A more radical way to get away from Margarita’s hype is to cruise the mainland. Stretching for 70km (45mi) under Margarita, the Peninsula de Araya is sheltered from the swell by the Isla Coche, itself sitting in water too deep for waves to break. However el Morro de Chacopata is fully exposed, and the reefbreak represents the closest reliable spot for Cumana’s surfing community. Lefts and rights over rock plus there can be a long sandy right in front of the Chacopata port.
