Cheng Gong is a surf spot located south of the Three Fairy Platform. It features a left reef/point setup that breaks relatively close to the shore. The spot is best surfed during typhoon seasons, specifically when the storms are at Category 4 or 5 and coming from the E-SE. You can also catch it working with large swells from the NE. It’s important to note that winds from the N or NE generally don’t cause issues here.
This break handles a variety of swell sizes and can be surfed when the swell is around 2ft (about 0.6 meters). The optimal conditions occur when swells are coming from the Southeast, but it can also pick up waves from the Northeast. The waves break over a dead coral shelf, creating a point break that usually peels left. It's best to surf at low, mid, or high tide, but remember that this spot is intended for expert surfers only. The environment includes sharp rocks and fast lips, which can make for some challenging conditions.
Before heading out, be aware that rips can be present, so it's crucial to know how to navigate these challenges. Make sure you are experienced enough to take on the fast-moving waves and sharp underwater topography. Overall, Cheng Gong provides a unique surfing experience, but it definitely caters to those who have the skills to handle it.
