China Beach - Vancouver Island surf guide

China Beach, located on the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island, is a rocky beachbreak just off Highway 14. It's a short walk from the parking lot, making it fairly accessible for surfers looking for a session. While it's not the most famous surf spot around, it has its own charm and is mainly frequented by local surfers and those looking for a quieter experience.

This beach typically works best with northwesterly swells, but it can handle west and northwestern swells as well. The waves can be pretty mellow, making it suitable for beginner and improving surfers. The surf can be around 2 feet (0.6 meters), breaking over boulders and sand. Riders can catch left and right waves here, and the spot generally works well during low, mid, and high tides. Keep in mind that the summer months can be quieter, with smaller surf not really pushing through.

When you're planning your surf day, aim for a northeast wind for the best conditions. Itโ€™s a good spot to practice and improve your skills without too much pressure, but donโ€™t expect it to be firing all the time. Just pack your board and enjoy the surf, keeping in mind the laid-back vibe of China Beach.
