Chouchou Bay surf guide

Chouchou Bay is nestled in a pretty spot, surrounded by steep mountains and featuring a small village along the coast. This area has a rivermouth and a mangrove swamp, making it a unique destination for surfers seeking something a bit different. The location has some historical significance, as it's near the Baie d’Acul, where Columbus sought shelter during his first voyage. The cove itself tends to see decent surf, but it really needs a solid northeast swell to get things rolling.

The waves at Chouchou Bay break mainly to the left and are known for their reef setup over live coral, which adds some color to your ride but requires caution. They can handle swell sizes starting from about 1 ft (0.3 m) and are best during mid to high tide. When the conditions are right, you can expect a short but critical barrel section followed by a wrapping face. The optimal swell direction is northeast, with good conditions also coming from the north and east. If you’re riding here, you’ll want a southwest wind for the best experience. This spot is more suited for expert surfers, so keep that in mind if you’re planning your session.

To get to Chouchou Bay, there’s a new road that winds along the coast, connecting La Borgne and Cap Haitien. It offers a great lookout point along the way. You can park at the village, then take a walk along the mangrove to paddle out to the left. The area is lively with marine life, and the coral is thriving with urchins, so watch your step when you’re out there!
