Colán is a surf spot located on a 20km (12mi) long beach known for its warm waters and beautiful sunsets. While it attracts plenty of beachgoers, surfers might find the conditions less appealing. The waves here are generally on the smaller side and tend to be quite mushy, which makes it a better option for beginners who are just starting out.
The surf at Colán works best with a northwest swell and can handle swell sizes around 1ft (0.3m). Both left and right waves break over sand, but don’t expect anything too powerful. You'll find that the best times to hit the water are at low to mid and high tides with an east wind, but the overall lack of shape might not satisfy more experienced surfers looking for a challenge.
If you're a complete beginner, Colán can be a great place to practice and gain confidence in the water. Just keep an eye out for the stilt houses that line the beach and watch for any old pilings, as they are located right on the high tide mark.
