Colorado surf guide

Colorado is a well-known surf spot located in Nicaragua, specifically at Playa Colorado. This location features a rivermouth sandbar that offers some exciting surf opportunities for riders. While it's popular among tourists, you can also find a growing local community. Access to the waves generally requires staying at the private Hacienda Iguana or getting there by boat. If you’re walking in, be aware that it's a bit of a trek from Rancho Santana.

The surf here can be pretty epic. It works best on swells from the South to Southwest, ideal sizes being around 4 to 10 feet (1.2 to 3 meters). The rivermouth offers fast, hollow barrels when the conditions align just right, typically around the low to mid tide. When the swell hits hard, you can expect some solid right-handers that peel quickly and can even give you a nice tube. The lefts are rideable but not as hollow as the rights. Keep in mind that the waves can get a bit messy on high tides, and anything over double overhead tends to wall out. Light offshore winds from the north to northeast are preferred for the cleanest waves.

Although Colorado can get crowded, the wave typically spreads surfers across several peaks, reducing the feeling of being packed in. It's more suited for intermediate surfers, especially given the tricky shallow impact zone and potential debris from the river after heavy rains. The surf season here generally runs from April to August, so that's when you'll find the best action going down. If you’re into shortboarding, this spot will definitely satisfy your needs for some exciting rides.
