Compton - I.O.W is a popular surf spot located east of Freshwater, stretching along a long bay that offers a few different setups for surfers. This beach is known for its consistent breaks and can get quite crowded during the summer months. The area is supported by a car park at the northwest end, but do note that the cliffs can make access a bit tricky. Overall, it's a chill vibe here, with friendly locals welcoming surfers to enjoy the waves.
The surf at Compton is mainly a beach break with peaks that work best during mid to high tide. It handles a variety of swell sizes, typically from around 0.6 meters (2 ft) to 3 meters (10 ft). The optimal swell direction is from the southwest, but it can also handle south and west swells. You’ll find both left and right waves breaking over a flat rocky reef that’s partially covered with sand. The best wind for surfing here is from the northeast. It’s a spot that suits intermediate surfers looking for fun with its walling waves, but it can get more serious in bigger swells.
Paddling out is generally okay, but be prepared for some waves breaking a long way out, especially when the swell picks up. In the water, you might encounter some rippy conditions if things get big, so keep that in mind. Different board types, such as shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards, all work well here. Autumn is the prime season, particularly from September to November, when conditions tend to be at their best.
