More about Compton - I.O.W surfspot
Beachbreak peaks to the east of Freshwater, usually better with more water. Plenty of other beach/reef options on this southwest-facing coast in big SW swells providing the wind has N or E in it.
General: This long, popular bay stretches south and has three main set-ups. Fields is a consistent beach break with good, mid-tide peaks in medium swells. To the south is Middle Compton, a flexible spot with more powerful peaks and finally Hanover Point, a pretty mellow A frame which always attracts the crowds, best in medium swell at mid to high tide. Tides: Breaks through the tides. Size: Waist high to overhead. Wind: NE Swell: SW Bottom: Flat rocky reef partially covered with sand. Paddling: OK paddle but waves can break a long way out, gets rippy when big. Spot Rating: Variety of spots, overall pretty fun and walling, more serious in big swells.
Not great for beginners, safer bays nearby.
Cliffs make access tricky, National Trust cliff top parking with steps at Hanover Point.
Year round but September - November is best.
Crowd Factor: Popular breaks, especially in summer. Local Vibe: Pretty chilled.
Car park at northwest end of beach.
Silty water, generally clean.
Rocks, can be rippy and heavy when big.
