If the swell is big, then check Cooks Point, a grunty right point on low to mid tide with great S wind protection.
From Gisborne head east on Wainui Road State Highway 35. Continue north, just before you get to Tolaga Bay turn right onto Wharf Road. Wharf Road will turn left and stop at the southern end of Tolaga Bay near the wharf. At the end of the road park in the car park. From here its about a 25 minute walk to Cook's Cove along the Cook's Cove track.
There are also other reefs around Mitre Rocks and off Pourewa Island. Experts only. Low consistency and crowds.
