Costa Caparica surf guide

Costa Caparica is a popular surf spot located south of the Tejo River, stretching over 30 kilometers of coast. It’s one of the most consistent areas for surfers in Lisbon. The vibe here can get a bit busy, especially near the more built-up sections. With numerous surf breaks along the way, it’s a good idea to explore a bit to find your favorite spot.

The surf at Costa Caparica varies quite a bit but is generally suitable for beginners. The best swell comes from the NorthWest, and the spot handles swell sizes starting from around 2 feet (0.6 meters). You'll find waves breaking over sand, with options for both lefts and rights. For the best experience, look for low to mid tides, while the NorthEast winds are ideal to make those waves more enjoyable. If you're hitting up the northern section, spots like Covo do Vapor and Rio feature some fun lefts, plus there are several jetties like the ones known as CDS, which help keep things interesting.

Keep in mind that this area does get crowded, especially on weekends and during the summer. Depending on where you go, some spots may have more locals, so it’s a good idea to respect the lineup. If you're looking to surf Praia da Rainha, you'll find average beach breaks, which can be fun for practice but not always the most exciting. Just be prepared for a bit of a scene, and remember to enjoy the ride!
