Overview
Costa da Caparica is a huge stretch of sand with quality lefts and rights breaking over a sandy bottom. The northern end has regular groynes that trap sand and help form reliable sandbars, producing long walling waves and occasional short, hollow sections.
It is a popular Lisbon surf community spot and a regular contest venue. Bigger swells can make it heavy.
When It Works
The spot is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and takes swell from south through west-southwest to northwest. Big northwest, west, and southwest swells are part of the setup.
The main season is September to May, covering autumn, winter, and spring.
Wind and Tide
The workable wind window runs from north-northeast to east, with northeast as the offshore wind direction.
All tides can work, a rising tide is better, and high tide is the optimal tide.
Local Tips
Groynes can get busy, but there is lots of room to spread out along the beach. Each section has its own committed crew, while farther south the crowds thin and the water quality improves.
The lineup atmosphere is generally neutral and mostly chilled, with humility and respect expected. Rips form by the groynes, especially when it is big.
Boards here range from shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards, with waves suitable across beginner, intermediate, and expert levels depending on the day.
Access
There are regular car parks by the beaches.
