Croatan surf guide

Croatan is located just across the inlet from 1st Street in Virginia Beach. It's known for having a predominant left that breaks off a wooden groin connected to a rock jetty. While it can be a fun spot, don’t expect perfection all the time. It’s often packed with surfers, and there are some locals who aren’t too keen on the crowds. Parking can be tricky, so it’s best to park outside the restrictions and make the walk to the beach, especially since there are no facilities available.

The surf at Croatan can vary quite a bit. It handles swell sizes from 3 to 8 feet (about 0.9 to 2.4 meters) and works well with SE and NE swells. The best times to catch the waves here are during high tide with a NE swell, but it can also hold its own at low to mid-tide. A southwest to west wind is ideal, though it can handle NW winds better than some other local breaks. The sandy bottom can be fun for a range of abilities, with shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, SUPs, skimboards, bodyboards, and even kiteboards in the mix. Just keep your wits about you, as the shifting peaks can make things tricky, especially for beginners.

When it comes to the vibe, expect crowds, especially on good days or weekends. It’s not uncommon to be shoulder-to-shoulder waiting for a wave. The nearby jetty provides some wind protection, making it a little less windy when the swells are up. Just be cautious and avoid drifting too far south, as there are safety concerns due to military training in that area. It’s a spot that can be frustrating but also rewarding when the conditions align.
