More about Crystal Beach surfspot
Meacom’s mile-long pier was pulled down in 2009 and the surf scene has drifted south to peaks along Crystal Beach. Very average and always smaller than the Galveston breaks to the south.
General: The Bolivar Peninsula is the piece of coastline to the north of the jetties that protect the Galveston Ship Channel. Because of the jetties, the shallow offshore waters and the angle of the coastline, Crystal Beach rarely sees epic surf. Tides: Medium to high Size: Waist high to slightly overhead Wind: N, NW Swell: S, SE Bottom: Sand. Paddling: Drift sessions are the call with consistently strong longshore currents. Spot Rating: Probably not worth your time unless you just happen to be there.
Beginner to advanced
Easy.
Late summer/fall; late winter to mid-spring
Crowd Factor: Minimal; find your own peak. Local Vibe: Stoked to see another surfer.
Sometimes crowded, but not with serious surfers.
Proximity to Houston shipping channel and runoff from Galveston equals often not the best water quality.
High tides washing your vehicle away.
