Crystal Cove surf guide

Crystal Cove is a lesser-known surf spot located in the Laguna Beach area, offering a beautiful beach experience away from the usual Orange County crowds. It features a left-hand point break along with a few scattered reef breaks. While it doesn’t often deliver consistent surf, the scenery makes it worth a visit for a day in the sun.

The surf here can handle swell sizes from about 4 feet (1.2 meters) to 10 feet (3 meters) and works best on south, south-southwest, and short-period west-northwest swells. The waves come in both left and right directions, with the left-hand point being the highlight for many surfers. Expect to find waves over sand and rocks, making it essential to watch where you’re paddling. The best conditions are typically seen when the wind comes from the north to northeast. This spot can cater to different skill levels, from beginners to experts, although it tends to favor intermediate surfers who can handle some variability.

Accessing Crystal Cove is pretty straightforward; you can use the public parking lot and walk through the tunnel to the beach. Keep in mind that the crowd factor is usually low since this spot is often overlooked, making it a nice escape. However, be aware that the right waves don’t happen all the time. The surf season is mainly during the summer and autumn months, with the best weather conditions typically from July to September. Just be cautious of rocks and reef while you’re out there.
