Cumberland Island surf guide

Cumberland Island is a beautiful national seashore and the last stretch of Georgia's coast. It’s accessible only by ferry or your own boat from St. Mary’s. The scenery is nice, but surfing here is a bit of a niche experience. You can get some decent beachbreak, and it’s generally not too crowded, making it a good option if Fernandina Beach is busy or not looking great.

The surf here can be fun with waves reaching knee to head high (about 1 to 2.1 meters). It handles swells from different directions, like EastNorthEast, East, and even as far as SouthEast. On good days, you might see waves from 3ft to 7ft (0.9 to 2.1 meters). The bottom is sand, which is pretty forgiving for beginners to intermediates. You can ride both right and left waves depending on the conditions, and the preferred winds are from WestSouthWest to Northwest. Mid to high tides are best for catching waves here.

Keep an eye on the currents, especially with stronger NE and SW winds as they can get a bit tricky, but usually, it's pretty mellow, so most surfers can handle it. It's suitable for all levels, whether you're on a shortboard, funboard, longboard, fish, or even SUP. The best time to catch some waves is during late summer, early fall, or early spring. Just be aware of miscellaneous sea creatures while you're out enjoying the surf!
