Curral Joul is located at the tip of the exposed headland on the north side of the BaÃa de Joaquim Petinha. It's not a spot you see many surfers at because it’s pretty remote and can be tough to access, especially if you're not riding a boat. Expect to handle some tricky conditions here, and the line-up can be a puzzle to figure out. It's definitely not for everyone; you'll want to be an expert to tackle this wave.
The surf here works best with a northwesterly swell, handling sizes up to about 1 meter (3 ft). The waves break over an uneven reef, which can make things a bit chaotic. Most of the waves are right-handers, but be cautious as the line-up can section off badly. The ideal wind comes from the east and the spot can produce decent waves at low, mid, and high tides, although low tide is often preferred for better form.
Because Curral Joul is rarely surfed, you might find yourself out there with just a few others, if anyone at all. Just remember that getting in and out can be a bit of a hassle, so be prepared for that if you plan to take on this challenging spot.
