D Street surf guide

D Street is a popular surf spot located in Encinitas, just south of Moonlight Beach. This beachbreak attracts a range of surfers, from beginners to seasoned pros. It's known for being fairly consistent, providing rideable waves most of the year, especially during the summer and autumn months when the swells are just right. On sunny weekends, it tends to get crowded, so be prepared for company in the water.

This spot works best with southwest swells and can handle sizes from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) up to 10 feet (3 meters). The waves can break both left and right over a sandy bottom, making it user-friendly under normal conditions. Mid to low tide is the sweet spot for D Street, as too much water can slow down the surf. While it can deliver some fun waves at waist height, it really shines when it’s overhead and everything aligns. The ideal wind direction is from the east or northeast, and the best times to catch the perfect wave are during dawn patrols or evening glass-offs before the afternoon winds kick in.

When you're paddling out, it’s pretty mellow when it’s small, but expect a workout as the size picks up. While it can accommodate intermediate to expert surfers, it’s definitely a spot where the vibe can get competitive when the surf is firing. Plus, watch out for hazards like stingrays and rip currents, especially at low tide when shallow sandbars appear. With its easy access at the foot of D Street and ample public parking, it's a go-to for many surfers in the area.
