Dadong Hai surf guide

Dadong Hai is the main surf spot in Sanya and is situated in a busy tourist area. This wide bay offers a mix of surfing and leisure activities but can feel a bit run down compared to other popular destinations like Waikiki. The waves aren’t always consistent here; you really need a summer typhoon swell to get anything worth riding beyond the wakes from pleasure boats and jet skis. It can get quite crowded, so be prepared to share the water with both surfers and tourists looking to enjoy the beach.

The surf is best when the swell is coming from the Southeast, but it can also pick up waves from the East and South. This spot can handle swell sizes of about 2 feet (0.6 meters), and it features both left and right waves. The beach breaks over sand, making it a good choice for beginners. It works well at low, mid, and even high tide, but keep in mind that the best conditions often come when the wind is blowing from the North.

Due to the variable nature of the waves, Dadong Hai is more suitable for beginners looking to practice their skills. If you’re a more experienced surfer, you may find the conditions less challenging than you’d like. Just remember to stay aware of your surroundings, as it can get pretty busy both in the water and on the beach.
