Desert Point surf guide

Desert Point is a surf spot located on the island of Lombok in Indonesia. It's known for its long, powerful left-hand barrels that can provide some of the best wave rides for advanced surfers. However, this spot has a reputation for being inconsistent, with good waves only showing up on bigger south and southwest swells. When the conditions are right, it attracts both experienced locals and traveling surfers alike, all eager to score that perfect tube ride.

When it's firing, Desert Point can give you over 20 seconds of tube time on a single wave, making it one of the longest rides around. The take-off can shift a bit, but you generally want to go deep from the start. Speed is crucial as the wave quickly ramps up and peels mercilessly over the shallow reef. The waves break over live coral and don’t hold back; the inside section can be intense, with a tricky exit that often ends with surfers landing on dry reef. It’s important to note that you’ll want to hit this spot on a low to mid tide when the waves are optimal for riding. Also, a southeast wind is best to keep conditions clean. This is not a spot for the faint-hearted; only expert surfers should tackle it, especially since you need to navigate the evil out-going currents and shallow sections.

For access, boats can reach the sheltered bay behind Bangko Bangko, where there are plenty of options for intermediate surfers at other nearby Gili islands like Ringgit. Keep in mind that the best days can be pretty rare, so patience is essential. Surf charters frequently head over from Bali, adding to the pack of dedicated surfers waiting for the perfect conditions.
