More about Desperation Point surfspot

Desperation Point is a clutch of big wave peaks for more experienced surfers. Powerful once it gets overhead, the large reef is a fair way out so lining up is tricky and any S or W in the wind is a no-no. Shifts around a lot making it a lottery for the punchy walls, which can be long at the preferred low tide.

From New Plymouth head south on the surf highway, State Highway 45. From Opunake, when on the main road State Highway 45, take Layard Street South West out to the point. From here its a short walk down to the water. Opunake Beach Holiday Park is on Beach Road right on the beach in Opunake.

Long paddle out.
