More about Domes surfspot

Rincon is the surfing epicentre and Domes is the first point to bend long rights onto its lava rock bottom. It’s offshore in the trades, picks up the most swell (although it doest handle huge) and is often the only show in town, so crowds fight over the sectiony walls and odd left that bounces around in the small bay.

General: Domes is the first sorta-protected spot as you head around the corner at Rincon, and as it's the furthest one out, it'll pick up some trade swell and is typically bigger than the other spots as you head south. The main bummer is that it doesn't really handle size too well, generally due to the fact that it's in a small bay; the water flushes in and around and creates an undesirable "toilet bowl" effect. The wave itself is a sectiony right wall (with a shorter left) that can throw the occasional tube; there are a couple different takeoff spots -- inside and outside -- depending on the swell, which spreads the crowds out a bit. Great spot to work on open-face carves. But as it's often (in summer and spring) the only spot working, crowds are inescapable. Tides: Not the biggest tidal changes but lower generally better. Size: Chest high-overhead+ Wind: Southeast Swell: N, NE Bottom: Sand and reef Paddling: Depends on the surf -- lots of paddling as it gets bigger and on certain swell directions/periods. Spot Rating: Fun wave on the right day that picks up more northeast swell than other nearby spots.

Size dependent -- good for beginners on small days.

Look for the, uh, dome. Park right there.

Late summer and fall for tropical cyclone swells but late fall through early spring for consistency.

Crowd Factor: Can get very packed. Local Vibe: Can be pretty heavy depending on who is out and how the surf is.

Rincon has all surf shops, schools, rentals etc.

A little dirty after rains.

Crowds, hostile locals and wannabe locals.
